Oral surgery is common in the United States, especially procedures like wisdom teeth removal, extractions, and implantations. If you’re slated to undergo dental oral surgery, having a good idea of what to do and not do during the recovery process can help.
Start your recovery the right way. At Pinnacle Dentistry, we offer the dos and don’ts that you’ll want to remember.
1. Do Rest
You should give yourself time to recover after undergoing oral surgery. Take at least 24 hours so that your body can deal with the swelling and discomfort you may experience following a procedure. Keep in mind, too, that you may be drowsy after surgery. By resting, you avoid any accidents that might occur when you’re not fully alert.
2. Don’t Smoke
Nicotine is a vasoconstrictor that reduces the amount of blood that you receive throughout your body. This means that you’re not getting the oxygen and nutrients you need to heal. Smoking can also distort your immune system, making infections more likely to occur.
3. Do Take Medications as Directed
Your oral surgeon will likely prescribe an antibiotic or pain reliever that you have to take throughout the oral surgery aftercare process. You want to follow their exact instructions to be able to heal correctly.
Most of the discomfort you experience after oral surgery will peak 48 to 72 hours after the procedure, so sticking to your medication schedule throughout the first two or three days is crucial.
4. Don’t Drink Alcohol
Oral surgery aftercare instructions always include avoiding alcohol. Alcohol interferes with your medications while simultaneously thinning your blood and slowing down the healing process. Most oral surgeons recommend that you avoid drinking alcohol for at least 48 hours after surgery, but it can be even better for you to do so for the entire recovery period.
5. Do Eat Soft Foods
You should try to eat soft foods after oral surgery. The last thing you want to do is open any stitches or dislodge the blood clots that naturally form during the healing process. Stick to foods like soup, mashed potatoes, oatmeal, and other similar options. You also want to drink lots of water.
6. Don’t Disturb the Surgical Site
During the first 72 hours of the healing process, avoid doing any activity that might dislodge the blood clots forming at the surgical site. This means avoiding rinsing your mouth aggressively, sucking through a straw, brushing directly over the site, and more. Make sure not to touch the area with your finger, either.
Having an Easier Recovery Period
After oral surgery, it’s imperative that you listen and adhere to all of the instructions your oral surgeon provides. By sticking to soft foods, taking the time to rest, avoiding disturbing the surgical site, and more, you can experience a smoother recovery process.
