Strong Teeth, Healthy Gums: General Dentistry in Colorado Springs

Dental Hygiene, Cleaning & Prevention

Preventive services — These help you maintain good oral health by stopping disease before it takes hold in your mouth. Regular exams (including x-rays) and professional teeth cleaning are a cornerstone of prevention. Your general dentist may give you detailed instructions to improve your at-home oral hygiene and may also recommend preventive treatments, such as sealants if needed.

Periodontics

A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease and in the placement of dental implants. They concentrate on the gums and the bones that support the teeth. According to recent studies, about one-half of adults in the US suffer from some form of gum disease.

Overall Health Concerns

Overall Health Concerns – Your oral health is a mirror of your general health. Some dental problems may reflect issues in other parts of your body and vice versa. For example, untreated oral infections can lead to poorer control of diabetes, an increased incidence of cardiovascular disease, and complications during pregnancy. General dentists are trained to identify these and other issues and offer appropriate treatment or referral when needed. One special concern is obstructive sleep apnea, a potentially deadly condition that can sometimes be treated with an oral appliance.

Have you ever come home to a place you've never been? That was the feeling I got when I walked into Pinnacle Dentistry and its comfortable and well-appointed waiting room (quite exquisite, actually). I was apprehensive, having just lost my way to finding the place (lesson learned), and having just switched dentists, hoping for a better experience, carrying a new fear of exposing my gaping and vulnerable mouth. The moment I walked in, I was greeted cordially, as I waited (a very short time) to be called back into the dentist's room. There, I was greeted by the lovely and attentive Alexis, Dr. Perrett's sidekick-in-arms. She was solicitous, friendly, and put me at ease (so much that I fear I might have yammered on too much about myself). Then the wonderful, warm, smiling Dr. Perrett walked in, looking like something out of "Top Gun." [It doesn't hurt that Dr. Perrett and his associates were prominently Cover-Page news in the Colorado Springs magazine I perused in the waiting room]. But Top Gun aside, Dr. Perrett proceeded to conduct a "new patient" exam, tooth by tooth, gum region by gum region, etc. He had, of course, read my new-patient paperwork. He, too, was solicitous about me (full disclosure, he was my dentist 10 years ago), remembering details about my life and family. No condescension. No shaming or scolding. Just straightforward wisdom fashioned by many years' experience and dedication. And study. As if that reception wasn't enough to instill confidence, the lovely individual who checked me out and scheduled my next appointment actually offered me a tour of the facilities (which, I might add, are STATE OF THE ART!). No more waiting weeks for a crown, they have in-house tech for that. I mean, this place is fully loaded for all things teeth, gums, and smiles. As I said, I felt I had come home to a place I had never been. I left feeling some peace in my heart (and mouth) about a continued association with Pinnacle Dental. Thankfully, Dr. Perrett is young enough that he will far outlive me and not retire. He is at the height of his game, and I am grateful to be the prodigal patient who came back home, where good care happens.
Response from the owner:Amy, we truly appreciate your thoughtful and detailed review and are so glad you felt welcomed right away, from the comfortable space and short wait to the friendly, attentive team. We’re grateful you highlighted how at ease you felt and the confidence you left with, along with our state-of-the-art technology and overall experience. Pinnacle Dentistry | Colorado Springs

We LOVE Pinnacle Dentistry! Everyone is so kind, we like all three dentists there, and they are conservative in dental decisions, choosing to wait if necessary to see if something is really needed (I had a recent nerve problem and we weren't sure if it was the tooth or just a nerve--it eventually went away without doing a root canal!!). We would NEVER think of changing to a different dentist at this point--our whole family goes there and some of our adult children as well continue to go! We can't say enough about Pinnacle Dentistry!
Response from the owner:Thank you so much, Sheryl, for the wonderful review and for sharing your kind words about our team. We truly appreciate how much you value our friendly approach, all of our dentists, and our conservative decision-making. Pinnacle Dentistry | Colorado Springs.

Frequently Asked Questions About General Dentistry

We recommend visiting the general dentist every six months. However, we may recommend more frequent dental visits based on your individual needs.

During your initial appointment, your dentist will check for cavities and other oral health issues. We may also take X-rays if needed and discuss any necessary treatments or recommendations.

Dental anxiety is one of the most common reasons many people avoid going to the dentist. However, many dentists offer sedation options to help you relax during procedures. Discuss your concerns with us, and we can tailor their approach to make you more comfortable.

Yes, in addition to general dentistry, we offer a range of cosmetic dentistry services. These include veneersteeth whitening, and smile makeovers to enhance the aesthetics of your smile.

While both dentists offer preventive care, general dentists treat patients of all ages. Pediatric dentists specialize in treating children. At Pinnacle Dentistry, we treat both children and adults.

Signs of gum disease include swollen gums, persistent bad breath, and bleeding when brushing. We can typically reverse early-stage gum disease with better oral hygiene and professional cleanings. More serious gum disease may require more advanced treatment. That is why it is essential to go to your regular checkups.

If you have a dental emergency, such as a missing or broken tooth, toothache, or injury to your mouth, contact us immediately. We will get you in as soon as possible and get you the care you need to restore your smile.

Maintaining good oral health in between visits at home is essential for complementing the care you receive during dental visits. This can include brushing and flossing regularly, avoiding sugary and acidic foods and beverages, and not smoking. Want to learn more about dental hygiene? Contact Pinnacle Dentistry today to schedule your first dental appointment and take charge of your oral health.

Dental Bridge FAQ

Most dental bridges are made from porcelain fused to a metal alloy, giving them strength while still looking like natural teeth. All porcelain or ceramic bridges are available for a more aesthetic look, especially for front teeth. Metal alloys such as gold can also be used but are not as popular today.

With proper care, a typical dental bridge can last up to 15 years. Longevity depends on maintaining good oral hygiene, avoiding grinding habits, and getting regular dental checkups. The adhesives and materials used also impact durability.

The main alternatives include:

Dental implants  – these artificial tooth roots are surgically placed in the jaw to support a crown, bridge, or denture.

Partial dentures  – a removable device with artificial teeth that replaces multiple missing teeth.

Bridges offer a permanent, non-removable solution to tooth loss that restores your smile and ability to chew and speak properly. They prevent remaining teeth from shifting out of position and maintain the proper shape of your face.

Bridges require altering adjacent abutment teeth by having their enamel removed to accommodate crowns. They don’t last as long as dental implants. Cleaning around bridges can be challenging, and care must be taken with sticky or hard foods.

Bridges require the same conscientious oral hygiene as natural teeth: brush twice daily, floss once daily, use an antiseptic mouthwash, get professional cleanings every six months, and avoid biting into excessively hard foods/objects.

It’s possible but not ideal since excessive grinding forces can dislodge or fracture the bridge over time. Your dentist may recommend wearing a nightguard appliance to protect the bridge and natural teeth.

There is no age limit for getting dental bridges if you are otherwise in good oral and general health. Many older adults have dental bridges to restore their smiles and maintain dental function.

It’s best to get any gum disease (periodontitis) stabilized first through scaling and good oral hygiene before getting a dental bridge. Otherwise, the disease can compromise the anchoring teeth that support the bridge.

Modern dental bridges, especially all-ceramic ones, look incredibly natural. The color, translucency, and shape allow the pontic teeth to blend seamlessly with your teeth.
