Avoiding Care is Not a Cure for Dental Anxiety

Visiting your dentist may cause you stress, but avoiding care is not a cure for your dental anxiety. Whether your dental anxiety stems from a negative experience, financial encumbrances, or fear of pain, avoidance of dental care will only worsen your dental health and cause further complications.

Visiting your dentist may cause you stress, but avoiding care is not a cure for your dental anxiety. Whether your dental anxiety stems from a negative experience, financial encumbrances, or fear of pain, avoidance of dental care will only worsen your dental health and cause further complications.

The Cost

While you may worry about the cost of dental care, remember that the recommended amount of visits to your dentist is only once or twice a year. These yearly or semi-yearly check-ups are typically a nominal fee and will help your dentist identify any dental complications before it worsens. These appointments also serve to provide preventative care and education on at-home routines to ensure that your health will be sustained long term. You may incur additional fees by missing the recommended appointments if your dental complications lead to surgery, the requirement of a specialist, or cosmetic treatments.

Gum Disease and Tooth Decay

Gum disease and tooth decay are common issues when a patient neglects their dental health. Do not fool yourself into thinking plaque is harmless; this bacteria causes tooth decay and destroys your tooth enamel. Left untreated, cavities are then formed and quicken the decaying process. The deterioration process can then spread to other teeth and even to your gums, causing gum disease, bad breath, constant pain, and tooth sensitivity. If you wait too long for treatment, you may be left with only two options: Lose the tooth completely, or have your dentist perform a root canal. Making regular appointments with your dentist will provide you with more options to work from – ones that are not as daunting as a tooth removal or oral surgery.

Mental Health Complications

Poor dental health and hygiene are not isolated as a medical condition; it can affect your mental condition and health as well. Having unappealing tooth stains, missing teeth, or visible infections can cause or worsen your anxiety, self-esteem, and lead to depression. More often than not, patients with poor dental hygiene prefer to avoid social occasions because they are embarrassed of the condition of their teeth or for having bad breath.

What to Expect When You Visit

Your first appointment will consist of a comprehensive dental examination of your teeth, gums, and oral tissues by your dentist. The dentist will then determine the type of periodontal or cleaning appointment you will need.  Your personal at-home care routine will be discussed, and your dentist will provide all the information on proper dental hygiene and care.
