How to Care for Porcelain Veneers

Have you ever wanted a brand-new smile you are proud to show off? One of the best ways to transform your smile is by getting veneers. Dental veneers are thin shells attached to the surface of your existing teeth. A complete set of veneers creates a full smile that is free of chips, cracks, and discoloration.

Dental veneers can be made with a variety of materials, but in many cases, they are made of porcelain. When you think of porcelain, you might imagine delicate dolls or intricate dishware, but porcelain veneers can be very durable and long-lasting if well-maintained. Read on to find out about caring for your porcelain veneers.

What Happens When Porcelain Veneers Are Placed?

To better understand how to care for your veneers, you should first know what they do and how they are placed. Veneers are used to make the teeth visually appealing. They can be used to address the following dental concerns and more:

  • Chips in the teeth
  • Smaller than normal teeth
  • Gaps between the teeth
  • Staining or discoloration

When you get veneers, your natural tooth may be shaved down slightly or left as is, and a strong adhesive is applied on the surface. The thin veneer is then affixed to the tooth so that it remains stable and strong. The result is a fuller, whiter smile free of imperfections.

The Proper Care for Porcelain Veneers

The idea of having porcelain veneers may seem like cause for concern, but these dental pieces can last for many years if adequately cared for. To protect your veneers long-term, you must practice good oral hygiene.

You need to keep your dental veneers clean by brushing at least twice a day and using an antibacterial mouthwash. Remove food particles and bacteria from between your veneers by flossing after every meal, just as you would with your natural teeth.

To achieve a deeper cleaning and maintain your overall oral health, you must have regular dental visits. Seeing your dentist at least twice a year for professional cleanings will help remove plaque buildup from the veneers and from the backside of the natural teeth.

During these regular check-ups, your dentist can detect any problems with the veneers. These problems may include loosening, breaks, and chips. It is best to address these concerns early on so that you can keep your full smile intact.

The porcelain used in making veneers is very strong and durable, but it can still be vulnerable in certain instances. You should avoid hard candies that could chip or crack the porcelain. You should also keep acidic drinks and foods at a minimum, as they may wear your veneers down over time.
