How to Care for Full and Partial Dentures

Published by

Dentures are among the most common tooth replacement options in use today, with more than 40 million Americans using some type of dentures. That includes both full and partial dentures, which provide effective solutions for a wide range of situations.

While dentures can be highly effective, it’s important to take the proper steps to care for them for the best experience.

Daily Cleaning

Dental dentures require daily cleaning to avoid bacterial growth and other issues. This process is fairly straightforward. You can clean dentures with a soft-bristle toothbrush and a non-abrasive denture cleaner — not regular toothpaste.

After brushing the dentures, you can soak them in a denture-cleaning solution. This helps disinfect the dentures and remove any remaining debris. Your dentist will provide you with specific instructions on how to properly clean your dentures.

Proper Handling

Care is needed when handling dentures to avoid damage. Whenever you’re handling them, hold them over a soft towel or over water to avoid damage if you drop them. Dropping them onto a hard surface can cause serious damage.

Always store your dentures in a safe place when not in use. Simply wrapping them in tissue isn’t enough; opt for a dedicated case instead. Make sure you store them somewhere they aren’t liable to get knocked off and onto the floor.

Overnight Care

Removing a full or partial denture at night is essential to maintain oral hygiene and to allow your gums to rest. However, you can’t simply leave them lying out. Instead, soak them overnight, ideally in a special denture solution.

Make sure that your dentures are fully submerged so that exposed areas don’t dry out. This can lead to warping, affecting the fit of your dentures and leading to potential discomfort.

Regular Dental Check-Ups

If you have full or partial dentures, then it’s important that you keep up with regular dental check-ups even if you don’t have any remaining natural teeth. Your dentist will check your dentures for signs of wear and damage, along with any potential impact on your gums or other aspects of your oral health.

You can also discuss any discomfort or changes in fit with your dentist during your visit. This can help identify potential issues before they worsen. If there is some issue with the fit or use, dealing with it early can help avoid needing replacement dentures sooner than expected.

Fit and Comfort Issues

Ensuring proper fit is key to enjoying comfortable and effective dentures. Over time, dentures can change shape and not fit as well as before. Keep in mind that DIY adjustments are likely to damage your dentures, so talk to your dentist if the fit isn’t working for you. They can provide options such as adjustments or soft denture liners to improve your comfort.
