Periodontal Disease: What It Is and How to Prevent it

You might not know this, but periodontal disease is actually the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Yikes! So what is periodontal disease, exactly? Keep reading to find out what causes it, the symptoms to look out for, and most importantly, how to prevent it.

What Is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease is an infection of the gums that can eventually lead to tooth loss. There are two main types of periodontal disease: gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is the early stage of gum disease and usually doesn’t result in any permanent damage.

However, if it’s left untreated, gingivitis can progress into periodontitis, which is a more serious form of gum disease that can destroy the bones and tissues that support your teeth. That’s why it’s so important to be on the lookout for the symptoms of gingivitis so you can nip them in the bud before they turn into something more serious.

Symptoms of Gingivitis

The early signs of gingivitis include red, swollen, or bleeding gums. You might also notice that your gums are tender or painful when brushing or flossing. If you notice any of these symptoms, be sure to see your dentist right away so they can diagnose the problem and come up with a treatment plan.

Causes of Gingivitis

Gingivitis is usually caused by poor oral hygiene habits. When you don’t brush or floss regularly, plaque and tartar can build up on your teeth and along your gum line. This can lead to irritation, inflammation, and eventually infection.

Another common cause of gingivitis is certain medications that decrease saliva production or make your mouth drier than normal. These medications include antihistamines, decongestants, antidepressants, painkillers, diuretics, and heart medications.

Preventing Gingivitis

The best way to prevent gingivitis (and periodontal disease in general) is to practice good oral hygiene habits every day. Be sure to brush your teeth at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and floss at least once a day as well.

In addition to brushing twice daily and daily flossing you should also consider using an alcohol-free mouthwash daily as well as eat a balanced diet devoid of excessive sugars which leads to cavities. Also make sure you see your dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings so they can spot any problems early on and provide treatment before it becomes more serious.
